Tidepool Books
Read your students tidepool books to help them understand how tough organismmust be to survive life in a tidepool. Sea stars, mussels, anemones and other organisms must cope with daily changes in temperatures, waves, currents, salinity, as well as predators.
A few of the tidepool books below are out of print but can be purchased from Amazon.com or other online book sellers. Others are new and all present a peek at tidepool life for the animals who live there.
I recommend reading a few of the tidepool books before taking a field trip to a tidepool or starting the tidepool craft (page 7 above).
At Home in the Tide Pool Colorful, accurate paintings highlight common tide pool animals. For all ages. Watch the tide pool from low to high tide and your students will be amazed at what goes on over, under, and within the seaweed. Children can observe a miniature version of the ocean's vast ecosystem. |

In One Tidepool: Crabs, Snails, and Salty Tails A great preschool to grade 2 book about little girl peering into a tidepool. The bulk of the book is a "House-That-Jack-Built"-style cumulative rhyme introducing barnacles, fish, anemones, a sponge, snails, crabs, limpets, and a sea star. It also has a page of field notes that gives brief information about each of the animals. |

Kermit The Hermit (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) Although this tidepool story is about a deep-sea crab, rather than a tide-pool shore crab, the story is delightful and set in rhyme. |

Tide Pools: Life at the Edge of the Sea (Nature Watch (Lerner)) Although this book is written for older children, the pictures are great for younger ones and helps them understand how the tides come in and go out, covering and exposing countless ocean creatures. |
