Have them create a "Making Friends One Day at a Time" book to help them on their way. Below is the guide for days six through twelve. For parents looking for help for their kids making friends, try these preschool and kindergarten readiness ideas... Day 6 - FRIENDS FORGIVE EACH OTHER... Read: Little Polar Bear Finds a Friendby Hans de Beer Lars, the little polar bear, returns in an exciting new adventure. This time, while searching for someone to play with, he is caught in a trap and finds himself in a cargo plane full of animals destined for the zoo. Luckily, Lars's cage breaks open when the plane lands and, as he sets the other animals free, he finds the friend he's been seeking all along. Talk: Friends forgive each other Talk about how we all need to learn that everyone makes mistakes and our friends will not always do what we want them to. To have friends we need to forgive each other. Game: Mirror game Set children up with new friends. Share names. Child and a friend pretend they are looking in a mirror. The first child poses in a position and the second child copies. Switch and the other friend poses and the first friend copies. Keep the game short. Activity: Friends forgive each other. I can tell my friends how I am feeling. Use the emotion tracers and have the children make rubbings on the page. Day 7 - FRIENDS CAN SHARE. I CAN SHARE MY... Read:One for Me, One for You: A Book About Sharing (Blue's Clues) by Sarah Albee It's Sharing Day at Blue's school, and Blue is bringing something very special to share with her class. What can it be? Young kids making friends will love playing Blue's Clues to help Joe figure out the surprise! Talk: Friends can share. I can share my Post some pictures of everyday items (toothbrush, jacket, ball, comb, teddy bear, toys) where children can see them. Classify the items into two groups. I can share these items. Day 8 - SOMETIMES I TALK TO MY FRIENDS ON THE PHONE... Read: Half A World Awayby Libby Gleeson Many young kids making friends will have experienced a loss of a friend. This story is about two friends who have moved and how they cope with the problem. Talk: Sometimes I talk to my friends on the phone. Have kids share if any of their friends have moved away. Children can talk about different ways to keep in touch with their friends or relatives (Skype, phone, photos, emails...) Game: Telephone Message Game The group sits in a large circle. One person starts the game by whispering a short easy message into the ear of the person sitter to the right of them. The message is whispered once, then the new messenger passes the message on to the next person, so on and so on and the last person says what he/she hears and the teacher says what was first said. Activity: Sometimes I talk to my friends on the phone. My phone number is. Children glue their phone number on the page and try to copy it underneath. Day 9 - FRIENDS CAN CELEBRATE MY BIRTHDAY... Read: Alfie Gives a Hand by Shirley Hughes A boy going to his first birthday party shows kindness to another. Talk: About birthday parties Birthday parties can be stressful for little kids making friends. Encourage kids to share likes and dislikes so they realize that they are not the only ones who feel that way. Game: Freeze Up Just for fun play Freeze Up. Play music and tell the kids that to move to the music while it is going and freeze and hold their position as soon as the music stops (demonstrate first). Each time you stop the music, wait for a moment before you restart it to give the children a chance to see each other. Activity: Friends can help celebrate my birthday Children glue a cake shape onto the page and then glue on as many candles as their age. Decorate cake with craft items. Day 10 - FRIENDS ARE DIFFERENT IN SOME WAYS.... Read: Margaret and Margarita / Margarita y Margaretby Lynn Reiser Two children, one that speaks Spanish and one that speaks English meet at a park. The little girls gesture and play with their toys, each picking up a few words of the other's language and part as friends. Talk: Point out that friends are different in some ways and friends are the same in some ways. Brainstorm ways that the children are the same and ways that they are different (eye color, hair color, what kinds of homes they live in). Young kids making friends can be unwelcoming to children in the class who are different and teaching them this concept will help them be more friendly. Game: Same or Different Memory Game Children pick illustrated action cards (stomp, sit, jump, clap, hop...) and sit in a circle with the cards behind them. When it is their turn they choose a friend who shows them their card and says, "Same or different". If the two children's cards are the same, everyone acts out their cards (limit to 5 stomps etc.). Similar to the game of memory, when enough cards are revealed children will begin to know who to ask. Activity: My friends and I are different. Children complete the "My friends and I are different. I am taller/shorter than my friend" page. Two friends compare heights and then record their results with a picture. Depending on time and student interest they can also complete the next page, "Friends are different in some ways. Friends are the same in some ways." Day 11 - FRIENDS ARE THE SAME IN SOME WAYS, FRIENDS ARE DIFFERENT IN SOME WAYS... Read & Talk: It's Okay To Be Different by Todd Parr tells us all that it's okay to be different. Featuring brightly colored, childlike figures outlined in heavy black, Parr shows readers that just about anything goes. From the sensitive ("It's okay to be adopted"--the accompanying illustration shows a kangaroo with a puppy in her pouch) to the downright silly ("It's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub"), kids of every shape, size, color, family makeup, and background will feel included in this gentle, witty book. Accept and Value Each Person is a book about accepting and valuing people who are different from oneself and one's immediate family. Kids making friends learn about respecting differences, and appreciating people. It is part of a series calling "Learning to Get Along". Some other titles include: Be Polite and Kind Cool Down and Work Through Anger Join In and Play Know and Follow Rules Listen and Learn Share and Take Turns Talk and Work It Out Talk about how we are the same and how we are different. Be sensitive to children who are the only different one in a group, for example, the only one with red hair. Children can easily get upset when they feel singled out. Friends Same & Different Children stand up. Choose one child and name an attribute of that child (blue eyes). Child picks a card that says, same or different, teacher reads it out If different is chosen, all kids without blue eyes stay standing, the rest sit down If same is chosen, all kids with blue eyes stay standing, the rest sit down Make sure that each that every child gets to stand up at least once Keep the game going quickly (it will be tricky for some kids) Day 12 - THINKING ABOUT WHAT WE'VE LEARNED.. Game: Name line Get everyone to stand in a line. The first person says their name. The second person then says their name, as well as the name of the person who just said their name. As the children learn the names make the game harder by having them remember all the names from the beginning of the line. Help anyone who gets stuck and keep it fun! Student Book: Children use the last pages in the book to record the names of their new friends and to think about what they have learned about making friends. Children may say - I can smile, I can share, I can forgive my friend, I can be kind, I can help, I can play blocks or I can work with my friends. "Kids Making Friends One Day at a Time" Part 2

For little kids, making friends can be a challenge.

Have them create a "Making Friends One Day at a Time" book to help them on their way. Below is the guide for days six through twelve.

Day 6 - FRIENDS FORGIVE EACH OTHER...

Read: Little Polar Bear Finds a Friendby Hans de Beer

Lars, the little polar bear, returns in an exciting new adventure. This time, while searching for someone to play with, he is caught in a trap and finds himself in a cargo plane full of animals destined for the zoo. Luckily, Lars's cage breaks open when the plane lands and, as he sets the other animals free, he finds the friend he's been seeking all along.

Talk: Friends forgive each other

Talk about how we all need to learn that everyone makes mistakes and our friends will not always do what we want them to. To have friends we need to forgive each other.

Game: Mirror game

Set children up with new friends. Share names. Child and a friend pretend they are looking in a mirror. The first child poses in a position and the second child copies. Switch and the other friend poses and the first friend copies. Keep the game short.
