REMEMBRANCE DAY FOR KIDS

Explaining Remembrance Day for kids to understand can be a challenge. The complicated subject of war, the debt civilians owe soldiers for their efforts and sacrifice will most likely be investigated more thoroughly in the older grades.

This apple stamp poppy art lesson is a good introduction to the subject and an excellent follow up after you have read a few books to your students to help them understand the history of Remembrance and Veteran’s Day, why the days are observed, and why we honour veterans by flying flags, attending parades, buying poppies, by visiting hospitals and having a one or two minute time of silence.

At this time, young children can also be introduced to the concept that they are able to make a difference in making their world a better place, that the actions and choices they make impact those around them.
