More step by step drawing...

Rainbows, happy smiles, slides and more ...

First teach children the basic step by step drawing techniques on the previous pages. After they have had plenty of time to practice drawing the basic shapes, teach them the variations of the shapes belows.

After a few lessons and plenty of guided practice they will be making step by step drawings confidently and be able to draw more recognizable images on their own.

As always, work slowly, demonstrate with a large paper and check that all children are successful each step of the way.

Step by step drawing - Slides...

Teach children to make diagonal lines by calling them slides. They either start at the bottom and climb up the slide or start at the top of the slide and go down the slide. See image. Kids enjoy the slide concept.

Demonstrate on a much larger sheet of paper or a chalk or whiteboard and say somethng like this....

For diagonals going up... "Start on your paper on this side, this is the left side. Start at the bottom of your slide and go up, up to the other side of your page."

For diagonals going down... "Start on your paper on this side, this is the left side. Start at the top of your slide and go down, down to the other side of your page."

Step by step drawing - rainbows and happy smiles

Once the children learn to make rainbow and happy smile lines, they can put them together to make fish or any other object that needs a flattish oval shape.

Teach the children to make two dots on their paper and then follow the directions on the image.

The "happy smile" process is the same only in reverse. (see image)

Step by step drawing -
up down rainbows...

Call these up/down rainbows to help children remember. Once they have learned how to make a rainbow shape, follow the directions in the "Up Down Rainbow" image.

Soon the children will be making scales on a fish and bumpy clouds.

Step by step drawing -
Up down zig zags

This technique is really a variation of the step by step zigzag taught earlier. Say, "Make your dots, one under the other, then start at the top and go out and down. Make a full stop, then go down to the bottom dot. Coming to a full stop creates a corner. With this technique children can easily make beaks on bird, pointy teeth or a jagged dinosaur tail.

Step by step drawing -
Vertical shape practice

Give students a long strip of paper with dots down the side about one inch apart. The children can make the dots or you can divide an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper into 4 columns, make the dots , then photocopy it.

Putting it all together...

When you want the children to draw something for a theme page or other project, think in terms of basic shapes.

The fish is a rainbow line and a happy smile put together, 2 slides for a tail with a line to join them, zigzags for the fins and up down rainbows for the scales.

The chicken below is basically a triangle with the largest side on the top and a circle. The beak is a up down zigzag. Make lines for the tail and join them with the up down rainbow and a line back, a variation of the side rainbow.

Having trouble? Act it out!

Some children need to act out spatial drawing concepts. For the side zig zag , put 2 beanbags on the floor to represent the dots, then have the child start on the first beanbag, walk out like the image above, then come to a full stop, turn and walk to the next bean bag. Acting it out really works well with kinetic learners.

Step by step drawing tips...

Tips...

  • Be sure to spend enough time teaching and reviewing the basic techniques before you expect children to draw something with multiple steps.
  • Make the basic shapes and techniques above with plasticin and paint.
  • Start with the biggest paper possible and encourage students to draw big. To help them understand what size you are asking for try the following. Say, "Open your hand and put it in the middle of your paper. When you draw your first circle make it larger than your hand."
