Caps For Sale
"Caps for Sale" by Esphyr Slobodkina, is a terrific book to read as a follow up to 10 Apples Up On Top.
Instead of balancing apples up ont top, the peddler balances a stack of caps on his head.
The peddler in this folktale loses his caps to a tree of 16 chattering monkeys and must find a way to get them back. All the monkeys say is, "Tsz, tsz, tsz" and the peddler's frustration leads to the return of his caps.

For more fun, provide beanbags and have the children count how many "caps or apples" they can balance on their heads. Graph the results.
Tip: When graphing results for activities like this, use dots instead of names. Some children will be sensitive to only being able to stack 2 or 3 beanbags while others can stack 5 or more.

Build number sense with "Ten Red Apples"
Pat Hutchins', Ten Red Apples, contains rhyming, sing-song text and counts down from 10 as a the farm animals consume apples from a tree.
The book provides good illustrations counting down from ten apples to one apple on the tree.
Sample text:
"Ten red apples hanging on the tree. Yippee, fiddle-dee-fee!
Horse came and ate one, chomp, chomp, chomp.
Neigh, neigh, fiddle-dee-fee.
'Horse!' cried the farmer.
Save some for me!'
For each verse, an animal takes its fruit, then moves to the right side of the spread, creating a cumulative visual effect. After the ninth animal helps itself to the tree's bounty, a sole apple remains for the farmer, but none for his wife, who hopes to bake a pie. I
Children love the repetitiveness of the story, the hear the animal sounds and chanting the ending, "Save some for me", along with their teacher.

I let the students use this one with adult supervision. The pads make it easy to press down into the apple but prefer to have an adult present to make sure all fingers are safely out of the way. |
