Tutoring Victoria BC
I offer early childhood and elementary tutoring, as well as English tutoring to all grades in the Westshore area of Victoria, BC. I provide consulting to parents (homeschooling parents or parents with children in school) wanting to help their children make sense of new concepts or teach them in age appropriate ways.
I also teach illustrated journaling and beginning drawing to adults and children.
Childhood and Primary Tutoring
As a parent, you may be the first to notice that he/she needs some extra help to succeed in school. Perhaps your child has had repeated ear infections or speech delays and is in need of direct, systematic instruction to catch up at school.
Reading
Your child will benefit from tutoring, if he/she has difficulty:
- concentrating
- listening or remembering
- being able to match rhyming words
- breaking words apart into sounds
- blending sounds together to make words
- remembering the names and sounds of letters
- remembering basic sight words
- playing words games
- recognizing words with the same beginning sounds
- pronouncing new words
- spelling
Signs of a successful reader
By the middle of the first grade many children:
- recognize and know the sounds associated with all of the letters
- self-correct if a sentence he/she is reading doesn't make sense
- remember many sight words
- try to sound out new words
- use information from pictures or from sentences surrounding the unknown word to figure out an unknown word (context clues)
- are phonetically aware
- possess a well rounded vocabulary
- know how to create sentences
- are able to relate reading to their own experiences
Difficulties in any of these areas can impede reading development. I tutor children with a combination of phonics, sight vocabulary, word patterns and context clue skills and incorporate drawing and creativity into the activities.
Signs of difficulty with mathematics...
Children who find it hard to make repeat patterns with blocks, count out specific numbers of objects, sequence and classify objects, have a lack of math vocabulary or have a difficult time finishing number operations, may need additional hands on math instruction before tackling more abstract math concepts. Specific activities targeting these areas can increase your child's mathematical understanding.
Older children who missed out on hands on experiences...
If your child has problems in math, he/she may need a time of well organized hands on intervention to gain a greater understanding of numbers and math concepts and to catch up with his/her peers.
As an educator with over twenty years of experience working with children, I offer reading & math strategies, lessons, and hands on activities designed to help each child learn and increase confidence. Whether your child needs more hands on experiences to understand math concepts, help organizing information in order to learn it or intervention to experience success at reading, I can help.
