As a parent, you know your child and may be the first to notice that he/she needs some extra help to succeed in school. Perhaps your child has had repeated ear infections or speech delays and is need of direct, systematic instruction to catch up at school.
Reading
Your child will benefit from tutoring, if he/she has difficulty:
- concentrating, listening or remembering
- rhyming words
- breaking words apart into sounds
- blending sounds together to make words
- remembering the names and sounds of letters
- playing words games
- recognizing words with the same beginning sounds
- pronouncing new words
Signs of a successful reader
By the middle of first grade many children:
- know the sounds associated with all of the letters
- self-correct if a sentence he/she is reading doesn't make sense
- remember many sight words
- try to sound out new words
Good readers are phonemically aware, understand the alphabetic principle, apply these skills in a rapid and fluent manner, possess strong vocabularies, know how to create well formed sentences, and are able to relate reading to their own experiences. Difficulties in any of these areas can impede reading development. Children are instructed with a combination of phonics, sight vocabulary and context.

Younger children
Younger children who find it hard to make repeat patterns with blocks, count out specific numbers of objects, sequence objects, classify objects or have a lack of math vocabulary, may need more hands on math instruction before tackling more abstract math concepts.
Specific activities targeting these areas can increase your child's mathematical understanding.
Older children who missed out on hands on experiences...
If your child has problems in math, he/she may need a short time of well organized hands on intervention two times a week to gain understanding of math concepts and to catch up with his/her peers. As a teacher with over twenty years of experience working with children, I offer a wealth of reading & math strategies, lessons, and hands on activities designed to help each child learn and increase confidence.

Tutoring Victoria BC Information
Where: Depending on where you live, I tutor at your home or at the local library
When: One hour sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks
Fees: Six week block - $360.00 (Includes one make up session at the end of the six week period if child cannot attend due to illness)
