Geometry for kids - 3 - 8 year olds

Kindergarten geometry

Just add math manipulatives and this resource contains everything you need to conduct successful geometry group and individual lessons.

Children are enthusiastic about birthdays, holidays and any day that is "special".

"Playing with Shapes - Special day geometry for kids", adds four special days for kids to get excited about to the school year.

This is a resource full of fun, engaging geometry activities to do during the school year combined with a teaching approach that encourages children to:

  • ask questions
  • sort & classify
  • measure
  • test
  • observe size, position, proportion and quantity
  • learn new vocabulary and
  • record their investigations

Help children succeed mathematically...

Including the following practices in your children's everyday experiences will benefit them in their journey to becoming young mathematicians.

  1. Provide math manipulatives to children to help them:
    • discuss math ideas with you and with their peers
    • learn through their senses
    • understand concepts
    • find multiple ways to solve problems
    • demonstrate their new knowledge and skills
  2. Give children lots of time to practice
  3. Introduce new vocabulary with meaningful activities
  4. Offer opportunities for students to record their new knowledge

My name is Patricia Bentham, educator and author of kindergarten-lessons.com. I've gained considerable knowledge, experience, and skills educating young children, researching, and writing about education for over 20 years.

Educators of young children are busy people, trust me, I've been there. I have complied the most effective geometry and spatial skills activities I've used during my kindergarten teaching career and put them into one easy to use, 35 page Ebook, "Playing with Shapes - Special day geometry for kids".

More Information about "Playing with Shapes"...

  • shows you how to present activities to students in ways that improve their ability to make sense of math concepts, as well as your ability to teach young children

  • helps you present geometry and spatial skill concepts in ways that promote exploration and problem solving and encourages students to be creative

  • offers hands on geometry and spatial sense experiences that not only help students remember new vocabulary but also motivate them to experiment on their own and to think mathematically

  • shows you how to teach with open ended activities and recording sheets for multi-level abilities, rather than single answer worksheets

Activities that work...

I tried various geometry teaching outlines but found that they lacked enough hands on activities and creativity, were too advanced or did not relate to the children's everyday experiences. It was frustrating to put so much effort into preparing for classes, only to have unsuccessful results.

I persevered, experimented and read. Through trial and error I found a more successful approach to teaching geometry to kids. As I began to use and refine teaching geometry with special days, the children's interest and ability to retain geometry vocabulary increased.

What is included in the Ebook?

"Playing with Shapes - Special Day Geometry for Kids", not only includes math concepts, but also teaches art, literacy, logical thinking, and science. See sample page.

Introducing and teaching geometry with special days:

  • helps students to gain new vocabulary and learn new skills
  • causes students to look forward to and be excited about a special day
  • offers students hands on, concrete learning experiences
  • provides enough activities to extend the teaching of each shape for a week or longer to reinforce vocabulary and math concepts

What kinds of activities do the children participate in?

"Playing with Shapes, Special Day Geometry for Kids", teaches geometry to kids by including plenty of hands-on learning.

What is hands on learning?Geometry for kids

  • Stages of hands on learning are often referred to  as concrete, connecting and abstract.

  • The “concrete stage” occurs when children use real objects to learn a concept or represent their knowledge. The terms “concrete materials or manipulatives” are often used to describe blocks and other objects used to teach math.

  • The term, “connecting or pictorial stage”, happens when children work with concrete objects and also use pictures, diagrams and symbols to record their learning.

  • The “abstract” stage occurs when children use only symbols to learn a concept or represent their knowledge.

The problem...

Often worksheets presented to young children make the assumption that the children have already completed activities at the concrete and connecting stages. The children miss these important steps when they are asked to complete only pencil and paper activities.

What are open-ended recording sheets?

  • Instead of worksheets, children record their observations and information collected from their experiences  on open-ended recording sheets.
  • Recording sheets give the children an opportunity to share and solidify their knowledge.
  • Open-ended recording sheets involve children at a wide range of developmental levels.

The geometry activities in, "Playing with Shapes - Special Day Geometry for Kids", are open-ended so children can complete them at their own developmental level. Some children will print words or sentences, make detailed drawings and apply more difficult math concepts, while others will print a few letters, draw less elaborate pictures, and record less complex mathematical thinking.

Do the activities only involve math concepts?

The activities include art, literacy, logical thinking, and science, as well as math. Open-ended recording sheets are included in the appendices.

Proven strategies and techniques that teach...

As I began to use and refine teaching geometry to children by incorporating the lessons into special theme days, I noticed an improvement in the children's abilities:

  • to sort sets of 3D objects by a single attribute such as size, color or shape
  • to use one or two attributes to explain a sorting rule
  • to state differences between two sets
  • to create 3-D objects
  • to make representations of their creations
  • to use geometric vocabulary to describe 3D objects and representations

Who can benefit from this Ebook?

"Playing with Shapes - Special Day Geometry for Kids", is a guide for:

  • parents who home school
  • early childhood or daycare educators
  • primary teachers,
  • education students,
  • beginning teachers,
  • seasoned teachers changing grades

When learning experiences are interesting, children are more relaxed, their attention is focused and they find remembering new concepts and vocabulary easier.
