Activities that work...
I tried various geometry teaching outlines but found that they lacked enough hands on activities and creativity, were too advanced or did not relate to the children's everyday experiences. It was frustrating to put so much effort into preparing for classes, only to have unsuccessful results.
I persevered, experimented and read. Through trial and error I found a more successful approach to teaching geometry to kids. As I began to use and refine teaching geometry with special days, the children's interest and ability to retain geometry vocabulary increased.

What kinds of activities do the children participate in?

What is hands on learning?
- Stages of hands on learning are often referred to as concrete, connecting and abstract.
- The “concrete stage” occurs when children use real objects to learn a concept or represent their knowledge. The terms “concrete materials or manipulatives” are often used to describe blocks and other objects used to teach math.
- The term, “connecting or pictorial stage”, happens when children work with concrete objects and also use pictures, diagrams and symbols to record their learning.
- The “abstract” stage occurs when children use only symbols to learn a concept or represent their knowledge.

Often worksheets presented to young children make the assumption that the children have already completed activities at the concrete and connecting stages. The children miss these important steps when they are asked to complete only pencil and paper activities.
What are open-ended recording sheets?
- Instead of worksheets, children record their observations and information collected from their experiences on open-ended recording sheets.
- Recording sheets give the children an opportunity to share and solidify their knowledge.
- Open-ended recording sheets involve children at a wide range of developmental levels.
