Videos for Kids
Animated storybook videos for kids are a great choice for young children. They have a much slower pace and energy than many other DVDs and videos, a benefit if you are trying to maintain a calm learning environment.
I don't recommend using these as a substitute for reading classic picture books to children but highly recommend them if you have already read the books or if you just have to have a short break!
Learning about authors
Try reading and rereading 3 or 4 books by the same author. Provide opportunities for the children to notice and discuss the illustration style and other similarities in the book. The children are then very excited to see picture book DVDs of the same books. Feel free to pause the DVDs at any time to build vocabulary and clarify concepts.
Scholastic has a number of videos for kids that consist of sets of award-winning and classic children's stories. I like them because...
- The DVDs are adapted and use a wide range of animation styles that match the original picture books.
- They are well narrated by celebrities such as Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Lithgow, as well as other speakers.
- They make a nice end of the week treat for the children that reinforces the stories read that week.
- The illustrations show up clearly on a large screen and as a prompt for an art lesson.
The following videos for kids contain classic stories such as Harry the Dirty Dog, Corduroy, and Make Way for Ducklings, to newer favorites such as Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type and I Stink!
